TOMORROW WILL BE JAY HAYES AND JT TORRES GOING FOR THE CLOSE-OUT IN BROWN LIGHT – ONE OF THE TOUGHEST JIU-JITSU DIVISIONS HERE.   ALSO THE BLACK BELTS.  WILL BE EXCITING!

Cory Robinson (NASHVILLE MMA) ended up taking SILVER in Purple Belt Pluma.  He finished his first opponent via Choke from Back.  His 2nd opponent was DQ’d for rolling out of bounds to avoid a choke.  In the semi-finals, Cory swept his opponent to win 2-0.  The Finals was vs. Patrick Nunez from AZ Combat Sports.  Nunez was able to take Cory down 2x for the Gold medal.  Still a great job from Cory!

Roberto Torralbas (THIRD LAW BJJ) was DQ’d for talking in the 1st round of Purple Belt Medio.  His opponent pulled half-guard from the start and the match went about 90 seconds without any positional change.  Lloyd began yelling for Roberto to attempt a choke, and Roberto asked back for more details. First penalty.  Not knowing what was going, we kept talking and so did Roberto. 2nd penalty.  Finally, Roberto started talking to the referee, asking why his opponent was receiving ADVANTAGES.  3rd penalty.  Roberto, confused, kept talking, DISQUALIFICATION.  A very bizarre turn of events.  Apparently, it is against the rules to talk to the referee, coach, or other fighter during the match (although this happened repeatedly throughout the event) including the Black Belt Open division.  The referee explained that it is the competitors’ responsibility to know 3 Portuguese words which were “Fight” / “Stop” / and “Penalty.  A very strange ending to the match.

Evan Gideon (CRAZY 88) won his first match 9-0, sweep, pass, mount.  He then passed his 2nd opponent to win 3-0.  In the round of 16, he swept, mounted, and armbarred his opponent.  In the final 8, he faced off vs. Elias Ramirez.  The match was even at the start, with Evan scoring an advantage for pinning Elias down.  Elias was able to get the advantage back w/ a near sweep.  The match went back to the feet and Elias was able to score big points with a sweep to pass.  With time running out, Evan went all out trying to get out from bottom and Elias locked on the bread-cutter for the tap.  Good fight!

Jon Delbrugge (CRAZY 88) was unable to compete.  In a total freak accident, he put a 6 inch gash into the top of his head as he entered the car.  There is some sort of plastic sunglass holder / dvd player holder thing that was hanging down w/ SHARP edges and he cut his head, forcing him to get 7 staples (pics to come at http://www.88bjj.com).  VERY VERY DISAPPOINTING.

Becker Escalante (THIRD LAW BJJ) lost his first round bout to Adam Nolasco (GIGANTE BJJ) 4-4 (1-3).  Becker earned all his points via sweeps and and Nolasco via takedowns.  This was at White Belt Pluma.

Kevin Dalton (THIRD LAW BJJ) lost 5-0 in the first round of White Belt Middle.

We are at the hotel relaxing before Devastator and Oz compete at 6 PM (california time)
