Add this Counter Takedown into Your Game!

Last weekend was the War on the Shore, a big High School wrestling competition that takes place on the Eastern shore.  We had two of our Teens Brazilian Jiu Jitsu students participate (as wrestlers of course).  They were Joe Hall and Chris “Short Round” Tran.

Coincidentally, last month, we were focusing heavily on takedowns and takedown counters post-sprawl in our No-Gi training program.  A failed shot is a very dangerous position in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts because the shooter does not have the luxury of a stalemate call (like in wrestling).  The failed shot often leads to the defender being able to spin behind and take the back of the failed shooter.  Furthermore, there is a multitude of counter takedowns and submissions that can be used.

In the following video, Joe Hall counters his opponents takedown beautifully and is able to score the immediate pin. Take a look.
