Last weekend was the War on the Shore, a big High School wrestling competition that takes place on the Eastern shore.  We had two of our Teens Brazilian Jiu Jitsu students participate (as wrestlers of course).  They were Joe Hall and Chris “Short Round” Tran.

Coincidentally, last month, we were focusing heavily on takedowns and takedown . . . → Read More: Add this Counter Takedown into Your Game!

Another Question about MMA Scoring

Yesterday, I was talking about speaking with Marcos Avellan about judging in MMA.  I find Marcos’ opinions particularly valuable as he comes from a very different martial arts background than my own – Marcos runs a MMA school down in Miami with a big emphasis on No-Gi and Kickboxing.  At this point, I would say my . . . → Read More: Another Question about MMA Scoring

MMA Judging Question

A few weeks ago, I was in Atlanta with Marcos Avellan who runs a very successful Mixed Martial Arts school in Miami (probably one of the most successful MMA schools in the United States) called Freestyle Fighting Academy.  We were talking about MMA judging given the recent Randy Coutore vs. Brandon Vera fight and the extremely . . . → Read More: MMA Judging Question

How Come Kids Can’t Do Rear Naked Chokes?

In the spirit of yesterdays post on why adult BJJ students can’t seem to learn double-legs, today we are pointing out how hard it is to teach a kid a simple Rear Naked Choke or “Mata leao”.

O brave new world, That has such guards in’t!

So I wanted to spend some time on organizing a list of all the different kinds of guards that exist now since a variety of positions have been named (largely in a rush to sell BJJ video instructional series).  Note that there is a lot of overlap between the positions.  I put the names . . . → Read More: O brave new world, That has such guards in’t!

“Perfect” Procrastination pt 2

Sometimes you need to drive this…

… So the one guy who came back after all those years was Will Vitellaro, Mike Atkin’s nephew and a man of his word!

My argument against “perfect” procrastination would be the following.

1.  Things are never going to be perfect.  Once you pay for your car repairs, finish your . . . → Read More: “Perfect” Procrastination pt 2

“Perfect” Procrastination pt 1

So I am listening to a business cd and the speaker is talking about “perfect” procrastination which refers to the tendency of people to procrastinate because they want to have things perfect. In her case, she was talking about writing a book and how she kept doing rewrites on it before sending it to the editor until finally she realized that checking the book was the job of the editor. . . . → Read More: “Perfect” Procrastination pt 1

Our Muay Thai Program in 2010

Since we began our Muay Thai Kickboxing program about a 18 months ago, we have seen it grow very quickly; Tuesday’s class might be the most popular in Crazy 88′s whole class schedule.  Just recently we had our second round of Muay Thai Smoker fights where the team went 3-0 (the last time we went 1-1-1).  . . . → Read More: Our Muay Thai Program in 2010
