The results are probably not indicative of most BJJ matches as they are based on matches between the very best BJJ Black Belts (only using Quarterfinals and later rounds of the World Championships) but they do provide some interesting insights that will help us better tailor our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training for future IBJJF competitions.

Rooster (Galo) division – 126.5 lbs

Submission Breakdown – 1 gi choke from back

14 Points Scored, 27 advantages
Sweeps – 8 pts (57.1%)
Back Take – 4 pts (28.6%)
Penalties – 2 pts (14.3%)

Matches fought with takedowns – 0% (immediate pull or double pull in all matches)

Matches won by Guard puller – 33% (2/6)
Matches won by Guard passer – 67% (4/6)
* 1 match was fought entirely from the 50/50 after a double pull so there was no top or bottom grappler

Observations:

• When the Guard Passer would win the matches, he would win mostly by advantages for near-passing rather than actually scoring three points for the pass itself.
• There does not seem to be any preference as to what type of guard works best.
• Although the Rooster and Super Featherweights did not pass each other’s guards, the top player did seem to win more than he lost.
